Meal planning from the recipes you saved on social media

THE SHORT ANSWER
To meal plan from recipes you saved on social media, gather them in one folder, pick four or five for the week, write one shopping list from their ingredients, and cook from your phone. anoli, a free iPhone app that saves recipe reels and TikToks into folders, makes this easier: it sorts recipes automatically, turns captions into ingredients and steps with Pro, and has a cooking mode that keeps the screen on.
Most of us have saved enough recipes to cook something different every night for a year. Yet on a Wednesday at six o'clock, it is pasta again, or a takeaway, because the saved recipes are buried in two apps and nobody has the energy to scroll for them while hungry.
Meal planning fixes that, and it does not need to be a big spreadsheet. If you already save recipes from Instagram and TikTok, you have done the hardest part: the ideas are there. This guide shows a simple weekly routine that turns those saves into actual dinners, with a short shopping list and less food waste. With the clocks about to go back and the evenings getting darker, it is a good moment to get a routine going.
Why plan meals from your saved recipes?
You saved those recipes because they looked good to you. They match your taste far better than a random meal plan from a website. Planning from them has a few nice side effects:
- You actually cook the things you saved. Saves stop being a wishlist and become dinners.
- One shop instead of three. Planning ahead means one list and fewer trips for a single missing ingredient.
- Less waste. When you know what you are cooking, the half bunch of coriander gets used in the second recipe.
- Fewer decisions on weeknights. The question of what is for dinner has already been answered.
What gets in the way?
Most people have tried planning and given up. Usually for one of these reasons:
- The recipes are scattered across Instagram saves, TikTok favourites and screenshots.
- The recipe is spread through a long caption, or spoken in the video, so writing a shopping list means rewatching everything.
- The plan is too ambitious. Seven new recipes in one week is a lot.
- The plan lives in one person's head, so nobody else in the house can help.
The routine below deals with each of these.
Step 1: get your recipes into one place
Planning is much easier when every recipe you might cook is in one folder, whatever app it came from.
anoli is a free iPhone app that saves posts from Instagram, TikTok and any website into folders. Share a recipe reel or TikTok to it and it reads the caption and files it in Recipes automatically. Recipes from food blogs go in through the same Share button in Safari. If something is unclear, it waits in Needs sorting for one tap.
If you already have a lot of saved recipes on Instagram or TikTok, you can bring them across in one go: in Settings, Import saved posts reads the data download from Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest, and sorts what is inside. For more on the setup, see our guide to the best recipe organiser app.
Tip: inside Recipes, make a folder called This week. It becomes your meal plan. Folders can sit inside folders, so it lives right next to everything else.
Step 2: the 20 minute Sunday routine
Pick a regular time. Sunday afternoon works for a lot of people, but any time before your main shop is fine.
- 1Check what you already have. Look in the fridge, freezer and cupboards. Note anything that needs using up soon.
- 2Open your Recipes folder. Search for the ingredients you need to use. Search looks inside captions, transcripts and your notes, so typing "courgette" brings up every courgette recipe you saved, with the matching line shown.
- 3Pick four or five dinners, not seven. Leave room for leftovers, a night out or a lazy beans on toast. Mix one new recipe with a few you know.
- 4Move them into This week. Now your plan is one small folder.
- 5Check the ingredients. With Pro, tap Summarise on each recipe and the caption becomes a clear list of ingredients and steps. Attach the video and anoli listens to what is said in it too, which helps with TikToks where the quantities are spoken.
- 6Write one shopping list. Make a note in the This week folder and list everything you need, grouped by where it is in the shop. Combine overlaps: if two recipes need spinach, buy one big bag.
- 7Set a reminder on anything that needs prep the night before, like marinating chicken or soaking beans.
That is it. It sounds like a lot written down, but once you have done it twice it takes about twenty minutes.
Step 3: cook from your phone
Cooking from a reel is fiddly. The screen locks, the video is too fast, and the caption scrolls away as soon as you touch it with a floury finger.
Cooking mode is designed for this. Open a recipe in anoli and turn it on: you see the ingredients first, then one step per page in big type, with big Back and Next buttons. The screen stays on until you are done. If you need to see a technique, the original video plays in the app with pause, scrub and speed controls, so you can slow down the bit where they fold the pastry.
After you have cooked it, mark the recipe as done and add a short note: "used half the chilli", "great for lunch the next day", "too fiddly for a weeknight". Then move it back to Recipes. Over a few months, your notes turn your saved recipes into a cookbook that knows your kitchen.
How to plan for a household
Meal planning works much better when everyone can see it. If you live with a partner, family or housemates, share the This week folder.
With anoli Pro, you send one link and the other person is in. Everything either of you saves lands in the folder, and each save has reactions and a conversation. So your partner can save a TikTok they fancy straight into the plan, react to the curry you picked, or comment "I'll do Thursday". Anyone with the link can also view the folder on the web.
If your household struggles to choose, the folder's menu has Decide together, where everyone swipes through the saves to agree on what to make.
Meal planning ideas that work with saved recipes
A few patterns make planning from social media recipes easier.
Theme nights
Give some nights a theme: Monday pasta, Wednesday something new, Friday homemade fakeaway. Themes narrow the choice, and your saved recipes slot into them easily. Make folders inside Recipes to match.
Cook once, eat twice
Pick at least one recipe that makes enough for two meals: a big chilli, a traybake, a soup. Autumn and winter are perfect for this. Save a Batch cooking folder and fill it whenever you see a good one.
Share ingredients across recipes
Pick recipes that use some of the same things. If you buy a bag of spinach for a curry, choose a pasta that also uses spinach later in the week. Search makes this quick.
Keep a list of reliable favourites
Have a folder of ten recipes you know work and everyone likes. On a week when you have no time to plan, pick four from there and you are done.
What about lunches and meal prep?
The same routine works. Make a folder for Lunches or Meal prep, pick two recipes on Sunday, and cook them in one go. Recipes from fitness creators on TikTok are often written for exactly this, with portions and containers in mind.
Do you need a dedicated meal planning app?
Apps like Paprika include a meal planning calendar and a shopping list builder, and they are excellent if most of your recipes come from websites. If most of yours come from reels and TikToks, the bigger job is getting those recipes into one place and into a usable form. A save app handles that part, and a simple folder and a note handle the planning.
anoli is free to start, with no account or card. anoli Pro is £10 a year, or the local equivalent, through the App Store, and includes summaries and transcripts, unlimited saves and notes, picture covers and folders shared with friends. You can cancel any time in your iPhone settings. You can get anoli free on the App Store and try the routine this weekend.
Make it stick
- Keep the routine short. Twenty minutes, once a week.
- Plan fewer meals than you think you need.
- Always include one easy fallback.
- Save new recipes as you find them, so Sunday's choice is already waiting.
- Look back once a month at what you marked as done. It is nice to see how much you have cooked.
If you are still getting your recipe saves in order, start with how to save Instagram recipes you can actually find and saving TikTok videos into folders. You can see how the app works on the anoli home page, or read reviews from people who use it.
